A breakfast at the famous ‘fu ji zhou ping’ was followed by Dou Jiang with You Tiao. The you tiao was really crispy and dipping into the thick and sweet soya bean milk was really a tasty combination! Much better than the one we’ve had in Taiwan.
We then parted our ways with Kai where he proceeded to Macau. Song and I went to buy his AX shades whilst Tch collected his visa. And it was followed by a trip into China! A short 1 hour train ride brought us to the borders at Shenzhen and clearing the customs was relatively easy. Shopped around in Shenzhen at the DongMen area and it just reminded us of the scene where we stepped from Singapore to Malaysia. From a megapolis to a city that is less dynamic and relatively cheaper in terms of food and transport, the HK to China transition certainly fits the bill. However, we were less than impressed with the shopping that China offers, probably due to the fact that we had different dress sense.
The events that were going to happen were really a lifetime experience, especially for Tch and I. Song met up with his relatives in China where we took a train ride from ShenZhen into DongGuan and an adventure was about to unfold. Before I go on, the train ride was really comfy. It is a classy train with cushioned comfortable seats, travelling at an average speed of about 160km/h. Certainly a vast improvement compared to the really run down train ride we had in Vietnam.
We were rather shocked upon arrival at their relative’s house, our accommodation for the next few days. A 4 storey building with plenty of rooms and décor belonging to those of the upper class, affluence is the only word to be used. Tch then challenged song’s granduncle in a game of Chinese Chess and I must say Tch did lived up to his name of a first team member of the AJC Chess team!
Song had much socializing to do as almost his entire family of relatives came down just to see song! There were about 15 of them, and hardly anyone belonging to our age group.
The dinner that came next was an eye opener.
The car we took brought us to a local restaurant. The restaurant was class enough for a couple to hold their wedding dinner there, and I believe from this description you can expect the restaurant to have at least a bit of standard. But that’s not all, we didn’t just sit at any ordinary table. All of us were brought to a private room in the restaurant, with a round table at the centre. So all 15 of us sat in this private room, with a few waiters and waitresses helping out to serve all the food. Prawns, fish, duck, chicken… It’s a feast. Not an ordinary feast. It was the biggest feast I ever had in my life, no joke. It is to the extent that for the first time in the trip, we didn’t take out our camera to take a shot of the food because it would just show our stupidity and lack of exposure to such a feast. In layman terms, taking a picture of the food on this occasion is simply a ‘throw face’ thing to do.
It was a 13-course meal by the way. And each and every single dish is worth a mention, going down Ang’s record books of the best food he had ever eaten in his life.
I shouldn’t go into much details of the feast. As we finished the meal and went out, we happened to pass by the tables for the wedding dinner. As I took a peep at their dishes, it was of no match to what we’ve had. They’ve had much smaller-sized prawns, less dishes and less décor on the dishes. I don think I need to further explain the feast we’ve had.
A pub session followed where his uncle brought along a few friends and we played the dice game over there. Each person had 5 dice each and we were supposed to guess the total number of each number. A little hard for me to explain here and I shant go into further details. It was a local pub cum club and they ordered lots of snacks and a total of 6 dozens of budweisser and we’ve had the VIP seats.
The room we stayed in was worth 4-5 star hotel class as well. The shower room was superb and one of them even had a ‘shower machine’. You step into a sort of cubicle and let the cubicle take care of you. On the ventilator and light of the machine first. Next, choose your favourite FM session and adjust the volume to your liking in order to enjoy some music whilst bathing. Then, adjust the temperature of the water. That’s not all, lastly, there are 3 sources you can select your water to come out from. Right from the top, from the sides of the cubicle, or from a movable shower head. This is called luxury my friend.
For now, we feel like a king. Are we in dreamland? Are we on a backpacking trip?
